Introduction

The Vessalius Dukedom (ベザリウス (こう) (しゃく) () , Bezariusu Koushaku-ke) is a noble family from Jun Mochizuki's Pandora Hearts. One of the Four Great Dukedoms, it is the most prolific and esteemed due to being the descendants of Jack Vessalius. He was the hero of the Tragedy of Sablier, wherein Glen Baskerville and his followers murdered all humans in the former capital and the city was subsequently dropped into the Abyss. Jack was the one to kill Glen and prevent the destruction from spreading to the rest of the world, and for such actions he and his descendants would be lauded for decades. Due to their difference in reputations, the Vessaliuses are long-time enemies with the Nightray Dukedom.

The Vessalius Dukedom is the family of Oz and Ada Vessalius, and was served by Gilbert Nightray in his childhood. It is lead by Duke Oscar Vessalius, though his elder brother Xai possesses their Black Winged Chain, Gryphon.

Over one hundred years ago, the Vessaliuses were no more than a third-rate noble house, of which Jack Vessalius was a bastard child. Jack lived in poverty for all his childhood until running away from home in his teens, where he was saved from starvation and given a reason to live by Lacie, a Baskerville girl. It became his life mission to somehow meet her again; to this end he advanced up the social ladder until becoming legitimized as a Vessalius son and using those connections to enter the Baskerville estate. There he finally reunited with Lacie, as well as befriended her elder brother Oswald, the soon-to-be successor of Glen. Not too long after their reunion, Lacie was executed for being a Child of Ill Omen. In his grief, Jack plotted to cast the world into the Abyss for her sake.

Over the course of a few months, Jack would form several alliances, manipulating Oswald, Lacie's daughters Alice and the Intention of the Abyss, and Baskerville brothers Gilbert and Vincent to reach his goal. At the peak of his plan, Jack Illegally Contracted the Chain Oz the B-Rabbit and destroyed the "Chains" distinguishing the material world and the Abyss. However Jack ultimately failed when Oswald used his power as Glen to limit the scope of the destruction before Jack killed him. Jack's attempts to gain more power to resume the destruction only resulted in Alice's suicide and the Intention's memories being destroyed. Sablier was cast into the Abyss, and the event became known as the Tragedy of Sablier, of which Jack was the sole human survivor.

After surviving, Jack extensively falsified the circumstances of the Tragedy to cast the Baskervilles as the villains who caused it and himself as the hero who vanquished them. He stole from them the Doors to the Abyss and using such power, established the Four Great Dukedoms and Pandora. Jack carefully chose his fellow Dukedoms to best suit his plans. The Nightray Dukedom, to keep a close eye on the enemy household and limit their power; the Barma Dukedom, for the way Barma siblings Miranda and Arthur helped him immensely in masterminding the Tragedy and the aftermath; and the Rainsworth Dukedom, for their royal lineage and to assuage the state's apprehension of giving so much power to a few families.

Due to his actions in conducting the Tragedy, Jack was expelled from the Hundred Cycles, meaning he was not allowed a true death by the Abyss. He was instead cursed to age circuitously, backwards from his age at "death" into an infant, then back again indefinitely. After approximately one hundred years of this cycle, the last remnants of his soul soon to be burnt out, Jack encountered his descendent Xai Vessalius and manipulated him to do his bidding. He utilized Xai's sense of duty to the Vessalius Dukedom to have him swap Jack's body which harbored Oz's soul with his stillborn son. He acted in a deliberately suspicious manner to have Xai discover his true nature and actions before anyone else and thus cast Oz into the Abyss during his Coming-of-Age Ceremony. And he carefully orchestrated Oz meeting Alice to regain his B-Rabbit powers, and Alice pursuing her lost memories to regain the fragments of his soul held within those memories. All of this in service of eventually regaining the power he needed to fulfill his ultimate goal of casting the world into the Abyss.

Overview[]

The Vessalius family currently consists of Oz Vessalius, Ada Vessalius and Xai Vessalius. Former members include Viscount Vessalius, Jack Vessalius, Sara Vessalius, Rachel Cecile, and Oscar Vessalius.

Oscar Vessalius is the Duke of the Vessalius Family, however he is unfit to form any kind of contract. For this reason, Oscar's brother, Xai, had to form the contract with Gryphon for the Vessalius Family. Oscar married a woman with a weak constitution, Duchess Vessalius. Duchess Vessalius wanted a child, as did Oscar, despite the fact that a pregnancy would put the Duchess' life in danger. Oscar was with Oz, who wanted Oscar to take a picture of him with his new camera, however Oscar wanted the first picture taken with it to be of his newborn child. Mere seconds later, valets of the Vessalius Family ran to Oscar, informing him of a great disaster involving his wife. Duchess Vessalius died, and Oscar's unborn child died alongside his mother.

Xai had married a woman named Rachel Cecile, and together they had two children. With the birth of his first child, Xai took the baby from Rachel while she slept and stormed off into the night. While he explained that he wanted to celebrate the boy's christening alone, Xai may haves switched his son for another baby, Jack Vessalius in child form with his Illegally Contracted Chain, Oz the B-Rabbit, as the dominant consciousness. For this reason, the child was named Oz, and Xai denied Oz because of his sinful existence. However what Xai did is not yet known.

Sometime after Ada's birth, Rachel died, and the rumored cause of her death was rooted with the Nightray family, however no real proof of this was ever found.

Ada is the sister to Oz Vessalius; however, not the Oz Vessalius that we know, as that is a Chain residing in the younger body of Jack Vessalius. What happened to Ada's older brother is not yet known. At any rate, Ada still cares for the Oz she believes is her brother deeply, always trying to protect him from getting hurt, even taking up black magic as a hobby to save him from the Abyss, she feels guilty for not being there for Oz when he needed help and will stand by him no matter what.

Jack Vessalius was born 100 years before the plot, being born as the third son of Viscount Vessalius. What made Jack differ from his brothers was that he was born out of wedlock. Viscount Vessalius left his mistress and never returned, leaving Jack to deal with his mother's hysteric behavior. Jack would later be known as the hero of the Tragedy of Sablier, despite having caused it himself, having conspired with Miranda Barma against Glen Baskerville in an attempt for Jack to reunite with his deceased love, Lacie and for Miranda to obtain Glen's head. Jack forced Arthur Barma to write a memoir detailing fake events of the Tragedy of Sablier that made the Vessaliuses appear as heroes, the Baskervilles as the villains and the Nightrays as traitors. After Jack's manipulation, the Vessalius family moved up in the world of the nobles, leaving their third rate status as a Viscountship to become a Dukedom, more specifically, one of the Four Great Dukedoms.
