This article is about the character, Alice (The Intention of the Abyss).
You may be looking for her twin sister Alice; the Core of the Abyss; or the Abyss.
Heey, heey. Has Jack still not arrived, I wonder?

—Retrace XXXI: Countervalue of Loss

Introduction

The Intention of the Abyss (アヴィスの () () , Avisu no Ishi), also known as Alice (アリス, Arisu), is a recurring antagonist from Jun Mochizuki's Pandora Hearts. She is supposedly able to control the entirety of the Abyss, and all Chains seek to please and protect her. Thus her power is sought by Pandora, a government research organization run by the Four Great Dukedoms.

She can't appear physically in the material world, but frequently manifests through the creation of smaller dimensions and through contacting Alice, whom she loathes. Prior to the Tragedy of Sablier, she developed an obsession with Jack Vessalius.

The Intention of the Abyss is the human child of Lacie and Levi Baskerville. Her birth was part of an experiment created by generations of Glen Baskervilles, hoping to gain control of the Abyss by providing its Core with a physical body. As a young child, Lacie agreed to her guardian's request to impregnate her before her impending execution as a Child of Ill Omen, in the hopes that a child would allow the Core companionship after her death. Upon Lacie's death, the Core took what was in Lacie's womb and raised them in her own, becoming the surrogate mother to the children. The Intention of the Abyss was birthed a few days later, along with her twin sister/alternate self Alice, despite the union not having meant to produce twins. Her aging accelerated due to having been born from a place unbound by time, and she was raised by her mother's brother, Oswald, now the new Glen, alongside Gilbert and his younger brother Vincent, another Child of Ill Omen.

Her body remaining in the Abyss, the Intention of the Abyss took the Core into her body, which caused the light of the Abyss to darken. Aside from the Core and her sister, the Intention was completely alone, and would switch bodies with her sister to appear the material world from time to time. As her birth was a taboo, the only person the Intention was allowed to see outside her surrogate family was Jack Vessalius, Oswald's best friend. She thus became very attached to him, believing him to be the only person who did not hate her. This would lead to her forming an antagonistic relationship with Vincent, whom Jack was also close to, as the Intention believed he may steal him from her. Her obsession grew to estrange herself from her sister, who did not trust Jack.

As the rivalry between Vincent and the Intention of the Abyss escalated, Jack asked the Intention if there was any way to sever the "Chains" which distinguished the material world from the Abyss. And so she offered Oz, a stuffed rabbit left behind by her mother. Shortly after, Jack would mislead the Intention regarding the impending death of Vincent's elder brother Gilbert, and, seeing the chance for revenge, the Intention told Vincent about it. On the day Gilbert was to inherit the Chain Raven, the Intention asked Oz to find a way to bring Jack into the Abyss with her before using Vincent's body as a conduit to open the Door to the Abyss. This would lead to the Tragedy of Sablier, at the end of which Jack approached Alice's material body to ask for more power. But Alice refused to relinquish her body to her sister and attacked Jack. To prevent Jack and the Intention from interacting, Alice committed suicide before taking Oz's powers into her own soul and destroying the Intention's memories. However, as the Core cared deeply for the Intention, she would not allow harm to come to her, and stole Alice's memories to replace those of the Intention.

The Intention of the Abyss and Alice as they appear in anime

The Intention of the Abyss, when in her human form, appears almost completely identical to Alice, but with white hair and violet eyes. She wears an entirely white dress: a simple frilled one underneath and an overdress on top, with a bow on the back that billows out at the end while it laces up the front with white string. On her arms are detachable sleeves that are also laced up. She wears powder-blue roses around her neck and around the waist of her dress. She wears white cloth tied around the base of her left leg, near the ankle, and black string around her right wrist. In the anime, she wears two separate black strings that are tied to each of her wrists.

Equipment - intention rabbit doll

The Intention's rabbit-doll form

Sometimes she appears in the form of a white rabbit doll with huge crazed eyes, a white dress, brandeis-blue capelet and a brandeis-blue bow.

Jack said that while Alice was the Intention she held either a white rabbit doll or Cheshire, and wore light colored dresses.

Personality[]

The Intention of the Abyss is soft-spoken and calm at most times, but is also unstable, and known for her rapid mood swings. She is often seen with a friendly smile, though she is known to tear people down with her words. While she bears a striking resemblance to Levi, the Intention inherited Lacie's disturbed personality when she was a child, as they both have danced in a rain of blood, and they both often shifted emotions, frequently unnerving those who were with them. They both also seem to be rather forgetful at times; this could be because they were both under pressure and stressed. However, Lacie was able to break out of that shell by learning to appreciate the beauty of the world around her. On the other hand, the Intention failed miserably due to the her inability to leave the Abyss and suffered psychological damage as a result of being the Core of the Abyss's vessel.

Despite having most of Lacie's personality, The Intention also received bits of her father's personality. Levi can talk extraordinarily bluntly and coldly, and yet cheerfully, demonstrated when he was informing Lacie of her demise. The Intention also masks her venomous words with sweetness, and talks in a cheerful, crazed, yet somewhat childish tone; this could be seen when she was mocking Kevin Legnard.

Before the Tragedy of Sablier, she was lonely, just like Alice was, and rarely smiled. She was ecstatic whenever she could explore outside the Abyss and spend time with Jack. When Alice was alive, the Intention had a gentle and easily frightened personality. Whenever Alice acted that way, that indicated that Alice's body was under the control of the Intention. Jack mentioned that she was also easily driven to tears, and not as wild and rough as Alice.

Overtime, from being so lonely, she came to no longer desire being the Intention of the Abyss and has asked Break to save her and Alice, showing that despite being cruel to people, she does care about others besides herself. She appeared to be somewhat more stable and nice prior to the events of 100 years ago. She is also shown to be heartbroken when witnessing Alice stabbing herself, and apologized over and over for hurting her indirectly. This shows that the Intention never hated Alice, and instead cares about Alice.

While Alice greatly resembles Lacie (especially in her appearance), The Intention greatly resembles Levi (also especially in her appearance). Following Lacie with her ladylike style in front of Jack; The Intention appears to be a princess-like figure with her girly, graceful, cheerful and soft-speaking style. But as previously described, The Intention inherited some of Lacie's personality traits such as having a disturbed personality, constant mood swings, and sometimes appearing to be frightening to other people; she has also danced under a rain of blood. Besides easily frightening other people, she is also easily frightened. She also dislikes it when someone interrupts a conversation of "interest" that she is having with someone. With that said, she will do something to the people who interrupted her, as shown when she used her power of Abyss to destroy Albus. who interrupted her conversation with Kevin.

As shown in the series, when she feels disturbed, she will feel a terrible anger to her interlocutor, and then she will become very hysterical. If her Dolls are with her, the Dolls will try to calm her down in any way. After the Tragedy of Sablier, The Intention became more stable and good at controlling her emotions, as shown when she meets Alice again and tells Alice about her memories. She also appears to be more serious.

When she was talking fiercely with Kevin about the death of the Sinclair Family, we can see that she has a somewhat similar style of talking with Alice, specifically when the two are in fierce conversations with their interlocutors.

She was considered as the most feminine-styled woman characters in the series, as shown with her love of her Dolls, tea parties, dancing (even in the bloody rain), flowers (especially roses), and her liking of light-pastel colors which she applies to her outfits. But at the same time, The Intention probably also had an extreme fondness with something with strong red colors, such as red roses, or something more terrible: blood.

Abilities and Powers[]

  • Governing the Abyss: The Intention governs and controls all of the Abyss and its Chains. She is also able to destroy Chains at will, like how she destroyed Albus in Retrace XXX: Snow White Chaos.
  • Self-Transformation: She can use her rabbit doll as a replica of herself to exist in the human-world.
Right

The Intention in Alice's body as depicted in manga.

  • Body Switching: She was able to switch bodies with her twin sister Alice while she was alive. However, it is unknown whether Alice inhabited the Intention's body during their body switches or not. On the title page for Retrace LXXIII, the Intention is in her sister's body but her Abyss-bound body appears to be vacant or asleep.
  • Control Over All Fabric of Existence: As stated by The Intention in Retrace XXX: Snow White Chaos, the Abyss's power can transform humans into chains, present willpower to the unwilling, and control all time that has passed, and control their dimension/universe/multiverse; in essence, existence itself. Also, she stated it was like a small world's ranged map. The thing Chains promise to potential contractors is that they will change the past for them; however, only the Intention of Abyss has ever been seen doing such a thing. She managed to change the fate of the Sinclair family for Kevin Legnard (Xerxes Break) in exchange for Break to protect Alice and to grant her wish, but it still did not end well for the family.
  • Creating Chains: Due to the fact that The Intention is the vessel for the Core of the Abyss within her, she is able to create Chains and even destroy them. She turned a tiny black rabbit doll that was always with her and her sister and had an existence created by the Abyss, into the most powerful destructive chain there is—Oz the B-Rabbit. Also, it seems that all chains obey The Intention's will, as chains like Humpty Dumpty (in Retrace LIX: Couldn't Put Humpty Dumpty Together) screeched: "Let's eat the Black Rabbit... The Will of the Abyss."
  • Creating an Ectoplasmic Form: In Retrace 76: Alice&Oz, she and her sister Alice created ectoplasmic forms of their souls after leaving Alice's physical body to get a hold of Oz.
Ghost
  • God-like: The Core of the Abyss was the sentient entity that existed before all things within the empty void. The Core of the Abyss can be seen as God within the Pandora Hearts series. Then, the Core of the Abyss proceeded to create all things such as, all of existence, and the Abyss ("The Golden Paradise"). It's implied that the Abyss served as Heaven, where souls would be guided by the Core of the Abyss into reincarnation. In that sense, the Core is essentially God. Since the Core of the Abyss merged with the white-haired Alice to make the entity known as "The Intention of the Abyss", the white-haired Alice can be seen as God-like since she became The Intention of the Abyss.

Quotes[]

  • "Hey, hurry and come pick me up. I have many different dolls ready for you, I do! Let's play with them, shall we? We'll talk until we get sleepy and.. And... Okay? So please...my beloved."
  • "I always thought that red would suit Cheshire."
  • "Bye bye, Cheshire."
  • "I don't want to be....the Will of the Abyss anymore."
  • "I hate Glen, because he tries to take 'that person' away from me. Gilbert, too, and Vincent. I hate anyone who dares to get close to 'him'."
  • "Didn't you know? 'The power of the Abyss transforms humans into Chains. It grants will to those without life. And ... because it is linked to all flows of time'.. the Abyss is a dimension that can rule over such beings."
  • "Oh ahaha! But everyone died, didn't they? They were killed while you were away. You could not protect them. Though they were precious to you... you could not save them ! '...Is that not why you've come here? To save the lives of those people?"
  • "Those who come to the Abyss are all the same. They're all desperate to get something back. But everyone goes mad partway. It seems being with the dear dollies - the Chains - is no good for them... Fu fu.. but you were different. You didn't lose yourself, not even at the end."
  • "For the sake of those people.. For the sake of my Lord... I shall try to turn back time,' you declared. And you killed so many, many people. What a fool you were!"
  • "I found him! Oz! Please bring this to that man. This is the only thing I managed to salvage from the darkness.. A shard of Lacie's memories.. her feelings. I think she would have wanted that man to see them."
  • "I'm sorry Alice! I'm so sorry!"
  • "Let's destroy... my memories."
  • "Alice... I think the Core was not trying to protect me, but was trying to protect both of us. If you had continued to use the power of B-rabbit you had stolen, your soul wouldn't have been able to take it and you would've been crushed by its power."
  • "You're going, then?"
  • "Someone is singing, I know this song. It's a soft, sad melody that wrings my heart, a song that someone used to sing to us... a long long time ago. Hey... who are you?"
  • "This is what I have wished for. I don't want to hurt anybody anymore. I don't want to lose anything else. So, please understand."
  • "Yeah, I understand. I know you're calling my name. I know you're thinking of me, and crying for me."
  • "My dear nameless you... Thank you for being with us all this time. And sorry for not being able to stay with you from now on."
  • "Cheshire...! Aahh... you've got scratches all over you! I'm sorry I didn't notice you until now... You were always protecting me, weren't you? I love you so much, Cheshire. Let's go together."

Trivia[]

  • The Intention of the Abyss is the formal name given to her; however she herself exclusively identifies with and responds to the name "Alice" which she shares with her twin sister. In addition, the narrative arc for her throughout the story involves the repeating sentiment that she and her sister are two versions of the same person, though the full implications are never expounded upon. Thus aspects such as etymological origins that Alice possesses will be treated as equally significant to her own character.
PH 24 plus 1 Intention profile

The Intention's profile in 24 + 1: Last Dance

  • "Alice" is a name with an Old French origin, which roughly can mean "of noble character or rank" or "of nobility."[1]
  • Alice is based directly after the titular character[2] of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland novels.[3][4]
  • Kinjirareta Asobi is the character song for her sister Alice. However the thematic implications of the lyrics allude to the relationship Alice has to her sister/other self, suggesting the song to at the very least be subtly related to the Intention.
  • Her likes are, in order, Jack, Cheshire, sweets, Alice, and Oz. Her dislikes are Glen, Vincent, and Gilbert.
  • Her skills include dancing. She is weak when it comes to bitter foods.
  • Mochizuki's comment on her is that she is the one who managed to understand Jack in the end. And though he may not have realized it himself, it was specifically because he felt something in that moment that he offered his body as a vessel for the Core.
  • Where confusion may arise as to which version of Alice is being referenced by fans, this Alice is usually called "White Alice" ( (しろ) アリス, Shiro Arisu) in Japanese. In English, her sister is usually called just "Alice," while this version of Alice is called "Alyss"—a portmanteau of "Alice" and "Abyss."
