Lily is cheerfully gazing at the viewer with a slight smile on her face on the cover. The shadow on the cover represents her chain's tail, Bandersnatch. The back cover features the late Nightray offspring: Ernest, Vanessa, Claude, and Elliot, with Ernest and Vanessa holding Elliot and Claude coolly looking on from a distance.
The air of celebration surrounding fifteen-year-old Oz Vessalius’s coming-of-age ceremony quickly turns to horror when he is condemned for a sin about which he knows nothing. He is thrown into an eternal, inescapable prison known as the Abyss from which there is no escape. There, he meets a young girl named Alice, who is not what she seems. Now that the relentless cogs of fate have begun to turn, do they lead only to crushing despair for Oz, or is there some shred of hope for him to grasp on to?
Vanessa hands Elliot a piece of paper. Elliot asks what it was and Vanessa and Ernest explain that it was a list of potential valets for Elliot, as he had recently turned fourteen and was expected to have at least one valet. Elliot thinks about having a lesser noble grovelling at his feet and hiding their malicious gossip behind a mask of meekness. This was what Elliot thought of all nobles and decided that the ones on the list Vanessa had given him were no different. Elliot thinks about how he'd rather die than keep one of them as his valet. Ernest sees that Elliot does not like the idea of a valet, so he gets up and tells Elliot to stop making such a displeased face. Ernest then tells Elliot to follow him so he could take Elliot some place nice.
Sharon receives word back from Oz through Equus about the Head Hunter attack and so she immediately goes to tell Break, Isla Yura's own valets do the same. Break asks Sharon if she was all right, asking if she was sick, but Sharon explains that Oz had found a headless body. Break states that the incident had nothing to do with their mission there, and that he'd continue to keep an eye on Yura, telling Sharon to watch Oz's movements through Equus. Sharon asks if it wouldn't just be better to bring him back right away, and Break asks if Sharon really thought that Oz would listen to her, as right now he was likely looking for clues to lead him to the killer. Break states that it was even better if the culprit was still nearby so that they could capture him or her when he or she attacked Oz.
Isla Yura and his attendants begin investigating the fallen Pandora members in the basement levels of Yura's estate, to which Yura deduces that from the appearance of the wounds that they were inflicted by a contractor, another power that arrived at the mansion, the Baskervilles. Yura also makes it known that he knew all along that Pandora was searching for the Sealing Stone.
Lottie appears before Isla Yura, posing as a lost guest on his estate, a facade that she soon overcomes as she has Leon attack and kill all of Yura's attendants. Yura is left gushing over the fact that both Jack's Container, Oz, and the actual Baskervilles have arrived on his estate, though Yura refuses to bring Lottie to the Sealing Stone, saying that she must get through him before that happens.
Rufus Barma tells Break, "I will share an important piece of information with you, Hatter... about a certain Chain the Nightray family are investigating."
Continuing from the last chapter, Xerxes Break is gripping Elliot Nightray's right wrist as Elliot begins to question what Break had said to him. He gets agitated and told Beak to, "CUT..THE CRAP!" Would I have killed... my own sister, Vanessa!?" Break quickly replies that "Given the Circumstances", it was possible.
Elliot tried to justify his innocence but Break cuts him off, violently pulling Elliot's hands behind his back and telling Gilbert to see if there was an illegal contractors incuse on his chest.
