Jack Vessalius' Pocket Watch is an object from Jun Mochizuki's Pandora Hearts. It is a golden pocket watch which, in addition to being an actual clock, also has incorporated in its mechanisms a music box. When wound, the pocket watch will play the song "Lacie." The pocket watch was created by Jack Vessalius, whose best friend Glen Baskerville composed the song. Both were created in the memory of Lacie, a companion of Glen and Jack's who is shrouded in mystery and whose death is somehow connected to the Tragedy of Sablier. The pocket watch is one of the many things within the story to represent Lacie's presence.
Oz Vessalius before his Coming-of-Age Ceremony is guided by the song "Lacie" and finds Lacie's Tomb, atop which the pocket watch had been placed. Inexplicably drawn to it, Oz picks the pocket watch up and experiences a strange memory-like dream. This is what allows him to discover his connection to Alice. From then on Oz keeps the pocket watch with him at all times, never parting with it.
Description[]
Jack's pocket watch is a type of Hunter-case pocket watch. Its body is golden and round, with a spring-hinged circular metal lid filled unique ornaments — on the center of the lid, the ornaments resemble a double-edged spear. The clock's face has Roman numbers to show the time, and there's a small opening that shows part of the music box mechanism on the inside. It also has an attached chain to allow it to be secured to a waistcoat, lapel, or belt loop – to prevent it from being dropped. In addition, it has a winding stem at 12 o'clock.
History[]
Jack had crafted the pocket watch as a reminder of his beloved Lacie, who he lost when she was sacrificed to the Abyss by her brother Oswald. Whenever the watch is opened, it plays the sad tune with a light undertone that Lacie always used to sing. After creating a tomb in honour of Lacie, Jack brought The Intention of the Abyss, who was using Alice's body, to her mother's tomb. He played Lacie's melody once more, before leaving his pocket watch on the grave, where it remained for over 100 years.
Plot[]
Coming of Age Ceremony Arc[]
While Oz Vessalius was exploring the mansion for his Coming of Age Ceremony with his valet, Gilbert Nightray, he heard a distant melody playing. He followed it, and eventually stepped on uneven ground that crumbled down, revealing stone stairs that led to a tree. On the bottom of the stairs, in front of the tree, sat Lacie's tomb.
Due to its age, Lacie's name had eroded off of it, but Jack's pocket watch still remained. Oz picked it up, not knowing who owned it but feeling that it was familiar, even though he was sure he had never seen the watch nor heard its melody before. Oz suddenly experienced a memory contained inside the watch, where he encountered The Intention of the Abyss and her sister Alice. 'Lacie' was also heard within the Abyss, as the Chain known as Alice the B-Rabbit heard the melody calling to her, and so she followed it to the material world when a path to the Abyss was opened.
Sometime after Oz returned from the Abyss, in the Rainsworth Mansion, Xerxes Break quickly expelled Alice – who was holding Sharon Rainsworth hostage – from Oz's body, making him drop the watch in the process. The watch then opened a path to the Abyss, which a Card then used to come out. Alice, now allowed to use her powers, quickly butchered the Chains. Soon after this, the group experieced the memory dwelling inside the pocket watch. After this, Oz carried the pocket watch with him wherever he went, much like Jack did 100 years before.
