Introduction

Isla Yura (イスラ=ユラ, Isura Yura) is a minor antagonist from Jun Mochizuki's Pandora Hearts. He is the son of the most powerful man in the neighboring country, and thus the distant relative of the Barma Dukedom. He is the leader of his own cult which worships the Abyss and its otherworldly power, believing that the dimension is the origin of everything in the world and the solution to all suffering.

It is discovered that Isla Yura is in possession of one of the Stone Seals which bind the soul of Glen Baskerville and protect against his return. As his followers intend to find and destroy the Seal to free their master, Pandora's goal is to be the first to obtain it and protect it from harm. Thus, Oz Vessalius and his friends are tasked with using Isla Yura and his cult as a foothold to get to the Stone Seal.

Isla Yura is mainly characterized by an obsession with forbidden knowledge and a fervent desire to reach the unknown. Thus he had been drawn to the mansion which contained the Stone Seal, which had been the subject of many dark rumors and possessed a reputation for being cursed. Upon purchasing it, Yura found that the mansion formerly belonged to the descendent of one of the original magicians who had created the Stone Seals. This descendent went astray in his duty to protect the Seal and instead began attempting to use the powers of the Abyss for his own gain, before dying in the middle of his work. Yura discovered his research and became obsessed, lusting for more. His ambition became to recreate the incident where the powers of the Abyss reached its peak in the material world, the Tragedy of Sablier.

To this end, Isla Yura created his cult to gain him more political power. Using this springboard, Yura approached the Nightray Dukedom and offered to help them with their secret experimentation on Chains. Togethere they spread the Illegal Contract of Humpty Dumpty among the children of the House of Fianna, with Duke Nightray's own son Elliot as the nucleus. Yura used these Contractor children as pawns in his grand scheme. It is for this reason that Yura invites Oz to have his Coming-of-Age Ceremony at his mansion, for he intends to use these circumstances as the foundation for his personally directed second coming of the Tragedy.

Appearance[]

Isla Yura, much like his relatives from the Barma Dukedom, has a slightly different appearance due to his foreign origin. Yura is a very tall middle aged man who had visibly sharp cheekbones, a crooked smile, shoulder-length crimson hair (which is kept tied in a ponytail using a long rope with tassels on either end, revealing a slight widow's peak) and round dark gray eyes that are complimented by his small wrinkles.

Throughout his time in Pandora Hearts, Yura is shown wearing numerous outfits - having five outfits during The Feast (although one is only revealed through Yura's memory in an omake), three outfits in the chapters prior to The Feast and an additional four outfits seen through flashbacks after The Feast. This individualizes Yura from other characters in the series, whose clothing rarely changes. A common theme of Yura's attire seems to be rather feminine, with Yura often wearing flower-print clothing, high-heeled shoes and elaborate hats on rarer occasion (though this could be part of a traditional attire from Yura's home country).

Both of Isla Yura's ears are pierced, with Yura often switching his earrings depending on the outfit he's wearing. Yura's final accessory is a necklace with a circular pendant with five chimes hanging down from it. In addition to the chimes, the pendant has a more detailed inscription - being the symbol used by the mages who formed the Sealing Stones, a snake coiled around a silver snake (similar in design to the Rod of Asclepius from Greek mythology), which Yura uses in-turn to represent his cult.

Personality[]

Isla Yura is selfish, only caring about his own goal of dying while laughing in the face of the unknown - having manipulated Bernice Nightray's weakness after the deaths of her younger brother and eldest son, as well as the entirety of his cult for their money, and Bernard Nightray. Yura even relishes at the thought of the smell of burning flesh, the blood and the turmoil brought on by the Tragedy, clearly displaying some form of mental instability.

In reality, Yura has never believed that The Feast he was hosting would bring the world to salvation through paradise, simply going along with it for the funding it brought him and for his own amusement. All throughout his pursuit of fulfilling his goals, Yura also shows great intellect, having carefully plotted every aspect of The Feast by creating some kind of distraction or applying pressure to the right points of weakness in order to get what he desires.

As an individual, Isla Yura is rather eccentric, as shown when he burst into an explosion of excitement after encountering Lottie, Jack and Oz - which was fueled by Yura's interest in the Tragedy of Sablier and absolute obsession with Jack. Further more, to promote his excitement, Isla Yura also has the tendency to wiggle.

Powers and Abilities[]

Although Isla Yura doesn't have any kind of Contract, he shows that he has remarkable endurance (which his appearance made seem unlikely to begin with), as he was able to escape from Break unnoticed when Dug distracted him briefly. Yura was also capable of retaining his crazed personality without visible weakness after being impaled by Jack. On top of his endurance, Yura also apparently has some magical ability, as he drew the ritualistic symbols that trapped Oz and forced him to the ground when he first stepped on the underground temple's floor (though it's likely that Yura taught himself his magical abilities by using the information passed down by the mage who bound Glen's soul).

Finally, Yura exhibits that he wields his weapons with a reverse-grip holding style, as shown when he went to destroy the third Sealing Stone.

Quotes[]

Trivia[]

  • The two parts making up Isla Yura's name translate into "island," from Spanish, whilst "yurayura" (ゆらゆら) is a Japanese onomatopoeia meaning "swaying." This could be a nod to Isla Yura's tendency to "wiggle" throughout his appearances.
  • Yura may be based off the Walrus from the poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter"[1] included in Lewis Carroll's Alice Through the Looking-Glass,[2] who along with the Carpenter leads a group of oysters on a walk across the beach, with the oysters eventually being eaten. This parallels what Yura does to the orphans of the House of Fianna.
  • His likes are, in order, pursuing knowledge, beautiful things, and Jack Vessalius. His dislikes are, in order, ugly things and orginary or average people.
  • His skills include skincare. He is weak when it comes to times of boredom.
  • Mochizuki's comment on him is, in the end, more than any other character in the story, he is the one who had died the most freely and at the highest peak of his happiness.
  • In the end, Yura's claims about the Abyss being a paradise once and using another Tragedy to plunge to world into the Abyss proved to be true, despite him not believing in it himself.
