Introduction

Fang (ファング, Fangu) is a minor antagonist from Jun Mochizuki's Pandora Hearts. He is a member of the Baskerville Clan and thus a dutiful follower of their master Glen. In contrast to his comrades, Fang is more willing to be civil or even amicable to the protagonists, his demeanor always very polite. Despite this he is still ultimately loyal to the Baskervilles and when it comes down to it will treat Oz Vessalius and his friends like enemies for opposing their master.

It is unknown exactly when Fang joined the Baskerville Clan, only that he had begun appearing most often after Oswald succeeded as Glen. He was present when the Tragedy of Sablier occurred, and though he was horrified at Oswald's order, he could not physically defy Glen and proceeded with the massacre. At the apex of the disaster, he was dragged into the Abyss along with the city of Sablier. He emerged from the Baskervilles' Door to the Abyss nearly one hundred years later, sometime after Oz is cast in himself. Afterwards Fang dedicated himself to helping recover all the power stolen from the Baskervilles, and finding the lost soul of their master.

Appearance[]

Fang-2

Fang's anime character design

Fang is a tall man who has spiky, depicted as red in the anime and as silver in manga illustrations. He has piercings in both of his ears. He has slanted eyes that remain closed and a short goatee. Fang seems to be fairly muscular and has an average height. He also has the tattoo of the Devil alongside his left cheek. Fang also wears a short-sleeves black shirt which matching-combined with a pair of khaki-black armband, khaki long pants and a pair of black boots within his Baskervilles cloak.

Personality[]

He has been shown to be the most polite Baskerville and treats fellow Baskerville Lily as his own family. He also has a close relationship with Lottie and Doug who he has been partnered with for more than 100 years.

Fang also appears as a polite, semi-formal man and quite calm. Fang also do whatever to defends his partner or friend in his team; as shown when he protects Lily from Break's attack, which caused his death.

Something which sets him apart from another members of Baskerville Clan is his critical attitude. He doesn't hesitate to criticize anyone, including his leader, as shown clearly during his involvement in Tragedy of Sablier; when he criticized Oswald's instruction to slaughter everyone in Baskerville estate at the failed Succession Ceremony of Gilbert.

Fang is also known to enjoy getting lost in his thoughts and drawing.[1]

Relationships[]

Oswald[]

Ep19 - oswald lottie fang dug

Fang criticize Oswald's order during Tragedy of Sablier

Fang's relationship with his master was strained after the Tragedy. Whilst Fang is bound to Oswald as his valet as a family member, Fang voiced his opinion against his master in regards to the unnecessary violence he'd ordered during the Tragedy of Sablier. The most prominent instance where this occurred was during the Tragedy of Sablier, where Fang was appalled by Oswald's order to massacre the guests in the Baskerville mansion and instantly objected to the order his master had given him. Oswald ended Fang's objection soon after, angrily rushing his valets into the order. Although Fang had no way of knowing that Oswald's intentions were in the benefit of those who were meant to be the Baskervilles' victims, Fang was still rightfully upset with Oswald. After the Tragedy, despite his disagreement with Oswald's orders, Fang still dedicated his life to searching for the Sealing Stones in order to free Oswald's soul so that the Baskervilles could reunite with their master. Fang did not seem to bear any regret working to bring Oswald back into the world.

Lottie[]

According to commentary by Mochizuki Jun, Fang had a crush on Lottie.[1]

Lily[]

Fang cares deeply for Lily due to her being the youngest among the Baskervilles. During their encounter with Break, Fang sacrificed himself in order to save Lily.

Xerxes Break[]

Fang voiced his excitement in being able to do battle with Break when they met, remarking on how impressive Break's skill was, as well as complimenting Break's strength and ability to defend himself against Fang with such a slender sword. Break only viewed Fang as an enemy. Break killed Fang when the latter took a blow meant for Lily.

Trivia[]

  • There is a discrepancy between the manga and the anime in terms of Fang's canonical first appearance. In the manga, Fang and all of the prominently recurring Baskerville members begin to appear regularly after Oz escapes from the Abyss, and the only notable Baskerville to be present at Oz's Coming-of-Age Ceremony that occurred ten years prior is Noise. In the anime, Fang is present during the Coming-of-Age Ceremony as well; this fact is considered entirely non-canonical.
  • His likes are, in order, being deeply lost in thought and drawing. He has no particular dislikes.[1]
  • His skills include swordsmanship and empty-handed combat. He is weak when it comes to drawing and songs or poems.[1]
  • Mochizuki's comment on him is that after departing from the main story, he has flourished as an artist in Pandora Hearchu. He is slightly in love with Lottie.[1]
  • Fang's Contracted Chain Tove is based off the Toves in the Jabberwocky poem,[2] a nonsense poem by Lewis Carroll included in Alice Through the Looking-Glass.[3]
